The
General Administration of the University of North Carolina received a $1,517,812
catalyst grant, titled "NC Catalyst," from the US Department of
Education under the Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology grants
program (PT3) in 2000. NC Catalyst is aimed at strengthening NC's
administrative, human resource, and technical infrastructure for pre-service
teacher technology preparation. An overview of the NC Catalyst Grant can
be downloaded (in PDF format) at the 21st Century Schools' web site http://21stcenturyschools.northcarolina.edu/
One
goal of the NC Catalyst grant is to provide professional development in
instructional technology for teacher education & arts and sciences faculty
and cooperating teachers. To accomplish this goal, each of the fifteen
North Carolina University-School Teacher Education Partnerships (ASU, ECU, ECSU,
FSU, NCA&T, NCCU, NCSU, UNC-A, UNC-CH, UNC-C, UNCG, UNC-P, UNC-W, WCU, WSSU)
will provide training opportunities for their faculty and cooperating teachers
over the next three years (2000-2003). At WSSU, the first year activities, which drew participants from both the School of Education and the College of Art Sciences, focused on the following: (1) basic computer applications, (2) Web page development, (3) multimedia presentations (linear and non-linear) and (4) aligning teacher education courses with ISTE, INTASC, NC DPI, and related professional standards. The second year activities will focus on creating electronic portfolios and developing Web-enhanced courses. Specific topics to be covered and the detailed schedule can both be accessed below. NOTE:
The summer retreat included
cooperating teachers from 4 Winston Salem/Forsyth County public schools. |
